And finally, in FP6 2002-2006 ; , INCO 2's policy-related activities focused on strengthening multilateral coordination as well as on the definition of research priorities. Framework 6: Getting the Developing World Involved Architecture of international scientific cooperation In January 2000, the European Commission launched its initiative to establish the European Research Area ERA ; . Its communication about the ERA, Making a reality of the European Research Area ERA ; : guidelines for EU research activities 2002-2006 ; stressed that the ERA must be opened up to the rest of the world. Through this process, the EU aimed to make best use of all the international scientific cooperation policies and activities undertaken within the EU, whether at Community level or in individual member states. As a follow-up, the EC's communication on the international dimension of the ERA set broad guidelines for a new policy on international S&T cooperation within the context of the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development FP6 ; and its launch. This policy fulfilled the strategic objectives of opening up the ERA to the world, which were specifically: To help European researchers, businesses and research organizations in the EU and in the countries associated with the FP6 to have access to knowledge and expertise elsewhere in the world. To help ensure Europe's strong and coherent participation in the research initiatives conducted at international level in order to push back the boundaries of knowledge and to help resolve major global issues. The ballots have been sent out to editors and will be returned to Clay Spencer for tallying. Discussion about the creation of the actual award was discussed. Dorothy Stiegler mentioned that Bob Thompson, CBA editor never received his award. Doug Learn charged Bob Fredell with calling Clay Spencer to inquire if he wished to remain on the committee as chair. Member Services Bob Fredell discussed the documents the committee created for successful chapter activities. He also discussed the idea of the ABANA representatives leaders for each chapter. He passed out "A Program to Enhance ABANA-Chapter Communication". Bob talked about getting people that have received money to fulfill their commitments. He mentioned that the committee felt that the forms were too complicated and the letters of reference and the photos were not necessarily needed. Discussion followed. It was felt that the letters were not too much to ask and that provisions were in the document for beginners who would not necessarily have photos of their work. Will Hightower mentioned that there was approximately , 000.00 in the fund. Will also asked the committee to be prudent in awards for this coming year since the nature of funding, i.e. `Iron-in-the-Hat' will be different this year at the Conference. Bob talked about the idea of the resource kit for chapters. Communications: Internet Dave Mudge and LeeAnn Mitchell discussed the website and the amount of space we are currently using. LeeAnn mentioned that XO Communications will probably be contacting us in the future and that we will probably have to increase our hosting plan. Dave brought up several requests from chapters to have an area on the site to post newsletters. LeeAnn indicated that this could be done in the future and the idea of replacing the former members' only site with pages that matched the public site would be desirable. LeeAnn also mentioned that Franklyn Garland no longer wishes to be involved with the searchable suppliers list on the website and a new volunteer needs to be located. Dr. Mark Williams has agreed to still be involved. Publications Dorothy Stiegler began the report talking about total number of magazines printed and how that number varies throughout the course of the year. She turned the floor over to Rob Edwards who presented three separate bids for publications based on ads and total pages. He submitted copies of the bid to the Board. He critiqued the current issue and mentioned the incorrect volume and issue number. An erratum will be printed in the next issue. Rob reviewed selected pages and mentioned areas for improvement. Rob reviewed his desired bid of #3, the bid that reflected an and ginseng. Abana databaseNccam.nih.gov health whatiscam What Is Complementary &Alternative Medicine CAM ; ? There are many terms used to describe approaches to health care that are outside the realm of conventional medicine as practiced in the United States. This fact sheet explains how the NCCAM, a component of the National Institutes of Health, defines some of the key terms used in the field of CAM. Terms that are underlined in the text are defined at the end of this fact sheet. What is CAM? CAM , as defined by NCCAM, is a group of diverse medical & health care systems, practices, & products that are not presently considered to be part of conventional medicine. While some scientific evidence exists regarding some CAM therapies, for most there are key questions that are yet to be answered through well-designed scientific studies--questions such as whether these therapies are safe & whether they work for the diseases or medical conditions for which they are used. The list of what is considered to be CAM changes continually, as those therapies that are proven to be safe & effective become adopted into conventional health care & as new approaches to health care emerge and motilium. Mineral preparation, Abana, was evaluated in estrogen-induced hypertensive rats. Aban is a compound preparation of indigenous drugs1 considered to be useful in the management of angina and hypertension2. The exact mechanism by which Abana produces antihypertensive effect is not known. Downregulation of -adrenoceptors, however, was suggested by the results reported with isolated atrium and intestine1 from Abana-fed rabbit. Recently, Bhattacharya et al., 3 reported that chronic treatment of guinea-pigs with Abana does not affect the -adrenoceptor mediated tracheal relaxation. Also Balaraman et al., 2 suggested that the antihypertensive effects of Abana might be due to its alteration in the transport of cations across the cell membrane. In the present study, we attempted to evaluate the antihypertensive effect of Abana in experimental hypertensive model induced by chronic treatment with estrogen4 and to delineate its probable mechanism of antihypertensive action. MATERIALS AND METHODS Animals and treatment schedule: Healthy female albino rats 200-260 g ; were divided into six groups each containing eight rats. Group 1 receiving water vehicle for Abana ; orally served as a control group. Group 2 received arachis oil 0.2 ml of vehicle for ethinyl estradiol ; intramuscularly daily for 3 weeks. Group 3 received ethinyl estradiol 1.5 mg kg day, i.m. ; for 3 weeks. Finely pulverized powder form of Abana was suspended in water for oral administration by gastric intubation. Abana 3 g kg day ; was administered orally for 3 weeks in Group 4, while Abana 3 g kg day ; was administered orally along with EE-treatment 1.5 mg kg day i.m. ; for 3 weeks in group 5. Group 6 received Abana 3 g kg day ; orally for 3 weeks followed by combined treatment consisting of Abana 3 g kg day ; orally and EE 1.5 mg kg day, i.m. ; for another 3 weeks. The animals were used for experimental study 24 h after the completion of treatment schedules. Body weights and blood pressure: Body weight of all the rats were recorded before starting the treatment and then after completion of treatments. The mean blood pressure of anaesthetized pentobarbitone sodium 40 mg kg i.p. ; rats was recorded directly from the common carotid artery by means of a Statham Pressure transducer coupled to a calibrated Twin Viso Recorder Sanborn model ; . The femoral vein was cannulated with a fine polyethylene catheter for the administration of drugs. Noraderenaline NA ; 0.5 g, 1 g and 2 g per kg ; , ACh; 0.5 g, 1 g and 2 g per kg ; and isoprenaline Iso; 0.5 g, 1 g and 2 g per kg ; were administered intravenously in a volume of 0.1 ml followed by 0.2 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride solution. Hindquarter perfusion: Female rats 225-250 g ; were anaesthetized with pentobarbitone 30 mg kg, i.p. ; and hindquarter perfusion was set up as described by Bhatt and Gulati. After 30 min of equilibration period, NA was injected intra-arterially at various doses in volumes. Identification of unknown samples or finishes. The key to using Raman spectroscopy in this application is to limit the power density delivered to the sample while maintaining the same total number of photons hitting the sample. This is most efficiently accomplished using larger area illumination with macro-line focusing. In addition, the use of Raman microscopy only for the analysis of paint samples is implausible due to sample damage and destruction caused by the intense power density created by the microscope. Spectra of intact panels and pigments, including samples with clearcoats, were easily obtained. For certain finishes, which contain pigments that are strong Raman scatters, data can be obtained in collection times of one second or less. Several examples have been presented of finishes which have the same Reference Collection of Automotive Paints colour, but which have different pigment compositions as indicated by their Raman spectra. Raman spectroscopy when used in conjunction with infrared is a powerful tool for the identification of unknown paint finishes 64 ; . Furthermore, they specify that Raman and IR-spectroscopy are complimentary tools that can provide information about the molecular structure of a sample. A more specific method of IR-spectroscopy is described by Fabbri et al. 65 ; . They state the mid-infrared fiber-optics reflectance spectroscopy as a non-invasive technique for remote analysis of painted layers. By coupling this technique with Fourier transform infrared FTIR ; benches it has been possible to perform non-invasive reflectance measurements of layers of paint. The technique has potential applications for non-invasive analysis of works of art. These measurements can present large distortions in the spectrum, both in band shape and absorption frequency, which may depend on the band strength, on the concentration of the sample, or on the optical layout of the measuring system. Therefore, it is difficult to compare reflectance spectra with those collected in the transmission mode and, consequently, with the available databases. The work deals with an overall survey of the limits and problems involved in the application of this analytical technique, an estimate of the reproducibility of the measurements, and the development of a correct measurement procedure. The analysis of spray paints has been initiated by several research projects over the last three years. Govaert, de Roy and Decruyenaere present their analysis of black spray paints by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence and visible microscopy 66 ; . In their searching, black spray paints from different European manufactures were characterised to investigate various types of criminal offences. A total of 40 black spray paints were analysed by three techniques: 1. Fourier transform infrared spectrometry FTIR ; using the attenuated total reflectance technology ATR ; , 2. X-ray fluorescence XRF ; and 3. visible microscopy of a coated surface. The results of the quantitative analysis permitted to classify spray paints according to binder type and elemental composition. A searchable spectral library was created. Variations of the paint composition due to can shaking prior to spraying were taken into consideration. A visible microscopic analysis of a coated surface characterised the morphology of the paint layer leading to a further discrimination of spray paints. The results of the latter analysis strongly depend on the structure under a questioned paint coating. This can severely hamper a comparative study. Govaert and Bernard 67 ; report the characterisation of 51 red spray paints from different European suppliers in order to determine the discriminating power of the sequence of analysing techniques optical microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence. Infrared spectra were classified according to binder type, filler and pigment 93. Where Sc is the Schmidt number of the gas kinematic viscosity diffusivety of the gas ; , and n is thought to be for all but the lowest wind speeds. Thus, accurate measurements of gas exchange for one gas can be used to predict kgas for any gas whose Schmidt number is known, and progress on the air-sea exchange of DMS can lead to advances in areas far beyond the fluxes and chemistry of atmospheric sulphur. In particular, kgas derived from DMS flux measurements could be used to predict the air-sea flux of carbon dioxide, the most important anthropogenic greenhouse gas. There has been much progress on air-sea exchange in recent years see Asher and Wanninkhof, 1998 for a recent review ; . Most estimates of DMS air-sea exchange have been based on measurements of aqueous DMS and parameterizations of kgas such as those by Liss and Merlivat 1986 ; or Wanninkhof 1992 ; . One advantage of using DMS for air-sea exchange studies is that the ocean is always strongly supersaturated compared to the atmosphere, so the atmospheric fraction on the right of Equation 7.1 is usually a small value or can even be neglected, and there is always a flux out of the ocean. Unfortunately, only relatively slow techniques for measuring DMS in the atmosphere, such as gas chromatography GC ; , have until recently been available, precluding the use of eddy correlation the most direct method ; to measure the flux. This requires us to use indirect methods, such as the gradient flux GF ; or relaxed eddy accumulation REA ; techniques. However, mass-spectrometric methods for eddy correlation may become available in the near future. The only previous study of DMS fluxes using the GF technique was by Putaud and Nguyen 1996 ; , who measured concentrations through inlets at different elevations near and over a ship. They found that on average, fluxes were significantly larger than predicted by the Liss and Merlivat or Wanninkhof parameterizations, although several profiles which showed negative fluxes into the ocean, despite the ocean always being supersaturated ; were neglected. However, that study was potentially affected by problems - 81! Each year, ABANA showcases the expertise of its membership during its annual conference, which focuses on a current trend in the financial services sector between the United States and the Arab World. In 2005, more than 115 ABANA members and guests explored one of the most rapidly growing sectors of the global market: Islamic Finance. This event proved to be ABANA's most successful conference to date - attracting record attendance and sponsorship. H.E. Rasheed Al-Maraj, Governor of the Bahrain Monetary Agency and William Rutledge of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, were featured speakers at "Islamic Finance: Players, Products & Innovations" held April 19th at the University Club in New York City. During this half-day conference, professionals examined the current and emerging trends and products in Islamic Finance for retail, real estate, private and public-equity funds, hedge funds and sukuks.
